Write blog reflection on what “freespeech” means to you
The First amendment promises a commitment to guarantee the right to express yourself. Whether this is having different religious beliefs with societies mainstream norms, or listening to emotionally draining grunge music, the first amendment gives us this right to express ourselves without any government interactions.
-In addition free speech to me means a variety of things such as: expressing one’s opinion, religious freedom, political freedom , or something as silly as smack talking a sports team with the government not being able to interfere since the law isn’t being broken. If someone is not breaking or going over the boundaries of “Free speech” then they are legally allowed to do what they want. – Law enforcement or people may not agree with this (such as confederate flags outside) but it’s a form of representing oneself.
Someone watching movies and tv shows on a pirating website and talking about how awesome it is. – That’s fine. However if someone is encouraging incitement such as making an account on the pirating website, that’s breaking free speech and against the law.
Another example of free speech and going overboard is from our class book: Free Speech on Campus on page 7 it talks about how anti-Trump advocates demanded that a couple of Universities administrations needed to punish students for stating slurs such as “fuck Mexicans” or “Build that Wall”. – Sadly nothing happened to these people and this freedom of speech differs from the riot on January 6th.
There’s highs and lows to freedom of speech. We in the United States have the right to express ourselves without going to overboard.
Our country was founded on freedom of speech. Whether people like the bumper sticker on the back of your car or not, that’s your right to represent your freedom.
